What is Dermovate?

Dermovate contains the active ingredient clobetasol propionate. Clobetasol propionate is a topical corticosteroid, which is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent that reduces the swelling, redness pain and itchiness that is encountered in skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis and psoriasis.

How to use Dermovate

Dermovate is available for prescription in three different forms, as a cream, as an ointment and as a scalp application. The medication is usually applied to the affected area once or twice every day.

Who can use Dermovate?

Dermovate is suitable for use by adults and the elderly but is not advised for children under twelve months old.

You should not use Dermovate if you are allergic to clobetasol propionate or any other of the ingredients in the medication.

You should not use Dermovate on your scalp if it is infected.

Dermovate cream and ointment may make worsen some skin conditions. These include acne, rosacea, perioral dermatitis, itching around your anus or genitals, viral infections, including herpes, cold sores and chicken pox, fungal infections, including thrush and ringworm and bacterial infections including impetigo.

The effects of Dermovate on an unborn baby when used by a pregnant woman and on a breast-feeding baby when used by its mother are unknown. For this reason it is important that you tell your doctor if you are pregnant, are trying to get pregnant or if you are breast-feeding.

What are the side effects of Dermovate?

In some cases Dermovate may cause a skin condition to get worse or become swollen. If this happens you should stop using Dermovate immediately and contact your doctor as soon as possible.

Dermovate may cause you to have an itching or burning sensation at the site of application. It may also cause a condition called pustular psoriasis, small pus filled bumps under the skin, in people with psoriasis.

Using Dermovate over a long period of time may cause stretch marks, thinning of the skin, changes in the colour of the skin, increased hair growth and make veins under the skin become more visible. Using Dermovate may cause weight gain and the face to become rounder though this is more common in children and infants.
