What is Metronidazole?

Metronidazole is an antibiotic, a type of medication that is used in the treatment and prevention of infections. These infections can include those of the mouth, the bones, the intestines and the genital tract.  Metronidazole is also prescribed to patients who have undergone surgery to prevent infections from occurring.

What is Metronidazole used for?

Metronidazole may be prescribed for various conditions including:

  • The prevention of infection following surgery.
  • Infection of the blood (septicaemia).
  • Pneumonia.
  • Infections of the bone.
  • Infections of the abdomen.
  • Abscesses in the brain.
  • Abscesses of the pelvic cavity.
  • Dental infections.
  • Infected leg ulcers.
  • Infected pressure sores.
  • Infections of the vagina.
  • Infections of the urinary tract or the genitals
  • Parasitic infections of the intestine or the gut.

Is Metronidazole suitable for you?

Metronidazole is not suitable for everyone. It should not be give to patients who:

  • have had an allergic reaction or who have shown sensitivity to nitromidazoles in the past.
  • have ever had an allergic reaction or shown sensitivity to any of the ingredients contained within metronidazole.
  • are elderly.
  • have a disease affecting the central nervous system.
  • have or have a history of liver problems.

Does Metronidazole interact with alcohol?

Yes Metronidazole does interact with alcohol. You should avoid drinking alcohol whilst taking the medication and also for two days after finishing the course.

Does Metronidazole interact with certain foods?

No, Metronidazole does not interact with any specific foods. It can be taken either with meals or on its own.

Metronidazole should be used with caution in patients:

  • with impaired liver function.
  • with diseases of the brain or of the spinal cord.
  • with some hereditary blood conditions.

Does Metronidazole have any side effects?

Yes like all prescription drugs Metronidazole can cause side effects. These include:

  • Diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea or abdominal pain.
  • A furry tongue.
  • Inflammation of the tongue
  • Sore mouth.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Swelling of the lips, face or tongue.
  • Headache.
  • Dizziness.
  • Drowsiness.
  • Skin rashes or itchiness.
  • Shakiness.
  • Muscle or joint pain.
  • Dark-coloured urine.
  • Problems with vision.
  • Depression.
  • Confusion.
  • Hallucinations.
  • Liver disorders.
  • Weakness and numbness
  • Leucopenia.
  • Seizures.
