What is Oxytetracycline?

Oxytetracyline is an antibiotic that belongs to a family of antibiotics called Tetracyclines. Tetracyclines are used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. Oxytetracyline prevents the bacteria, which grow on the skin and cause acne from growing and multiplying. This means that the bacteria will eventually die, the infection will clear up and the spots will disappear.

How to use Oxytetracyline

Oxytetracyline should be taken with water on an empty stomach. This is due to the fact that certain foods, especially dairy products may prevent the medication from being properly absorbed by your body. You should take the medication when you are standing or sitting down, not before going to bed.

Your doctor will tell you the dose of Oxytetracyline that you need to take. For skin infections the dose is normally one or two tablets every day. The course of antibiotics may continue for three months, sometimes longer.

As with all antibiotics, is important that you take the full course of Oxytetracyline. Failing to do so increases the likelihood of the infection returning and the medication failing to kill the bacteria. If you forget to take a dose do not take two doses the next time.

Who can take Oxytetracyline?

Oxytetracyline can be taken by adults and by children over the age of twelve.

Oxytetracyline should not be taken by anyone that has an allergy to Oxytetracyline or to any of its components.

Oxytetracyline should not be taken by women who are pregnant or who are planning to become pregnant.

Oxytetracyline should not be taken by women who are breast-feeding.

Your doctor will decide if Oxytetracyline is a suitable medication for you to take before prescribing it to you.

What are the side effects of Oxytetracyline?

All prescription medications can cause side effects. The most common side effects of Oxytetracyline are vomiting, nausea, diarrhoea, loss of appetite and problems swallowing. You may develop skin reactions such as rash and itching and changes to the colour of the skin. You may also become more sensitive to ultraviolet light.

Oxytetracyline may cause headaches and problems with your eyesight.

Although these side effects may sound worrying you should remember that most people who take Oxytetracyline experience no side effects at all.
