Victoza is the trade name of a drug called Liraglutide. Liraglutide has been approved in the UK for the treatment of patients with Type 2 diabetes but clinical trials have shown that it is also effective as a weight loss drug and can, therefore, be prescribed to patients who are either overweight or obese. Victoza is available in the United Kingdom for immediate dispensing and for next day delivery.
Victoza is administered daily by an injection under the skin and works by making patients feel fuller and more satisfied with a smaller amount of food. It also slows down the rate at which the stomach is emptied, which in turn means that patients who are taking Victoza do not crave as much food.
In a drug trial of Victoza, covering all of Europe, involving 554 clinically obese patients, there were considerable successes, with most patients losing a significant amount of weight.
The results were taken at week 20. The patients had stuck to a calorie-controlled diet and took regular exercise.
For those patients on a 3mg dose the average weight loss was 7.2 kg compared with those patients who were taking Xenical who lost, on average, 4.1kg and those patients taking the placebo who only lost, on average, 2.8kg.
76% of patients who were taking Victoza lost at least five percent of their body weight, compared with only 44% on Orlistat and 30% of patients on the placebo.
Patients taking a 1.2 mg dose of Victoza lost 4.8 kg, the patients taking a 1.8mg dose of Victoza lost 5.5 kg and those who took a 2.4mg dose of Victoza lost 6.3 kg
If you suffer from Type 2 diabetes then you will need to speak to your doctor about taking this medication as it may interfere with the treatment regime that you are already on. If, however, you wish to be prescribed Victoza for weight loss and you are not taking this drug for Type 2 diabetes then this may be possible. Victoza is being prescribed by a number of doctors for weight loss, who believe that the health benefits outweigh any potential side effects
Most patients who have taken Victoza have not suffered any side effects. A few suffered with vomiting and nausea but these effects were usually short- lived and did not prevent them form continuing on the medication.
