What is Famvir?

Famvir is an antiviral medication that is used to treat infections caused by the herpes viruses. These herpes viruses include those that cause genital herpes (herpes simplex 1 and 2) and varicella zoster, the herpes virus that is responsible for shingles and chickenpox.

What is Famvir used for?

Famvir is used to treat:

  • genital herpes (herpes simplex)
  • shingles (herpes zoster).

Famvir is also used as a treatment to prevent:

  • the recurrence of genital herpes.
  • herpes simplex infections in people who have impaired immune systems.

How does Famvir work?

Famvir works by preventing the herpes viruses from reproducing and spreading to more cells.

Side effects

The most common side effects from Famvir are headache, nausea and confusion, though these are categorized as rare (affecting between 1 in 1000 and 1 in 10,000 people).

Very rare side effects include:

  • Vomiting.
  • Dizziness.
  • Rash or itching.
  • Sleepiness.
  • Hallucinations.
  • Abnormal liver function.
  • Jaundice

Famvir should be used with caution:

  • In patients who have impaired kidney function.
  • In patients who are suffering with chronic liver disease.

Famvir should not be prescribed to:             

  • Patients with an allergy to penciclovir.
  • Children.
  • People with galactose intolerance or glucose-galactose malabsorption in 125mg or 250mg tablets, as these strength tablets contain lactose.
