‘The Obesity Epidemic’

Hardly a day goes by when there is not an article in a daily newspaper about the UK’s ‘obesity epidemic’. It might seem like tabloid sensationalism, but the facts prove that a growing percentage of people who live in the developed world are either overweight or obese. Indeed, in the United Kingdom, statistics show that around sixty per cent of the population are heavier than they should be.

Around 23 per cent of women in the United Kingdom are now classified as obese, which puts us at the top of the European League table of the fattest nations. British men do not fare much better, 22 per cent of them are classified as medically obese. Only Malta has more obese men than the UK. It is predicted that, if things continue at the rate they are going, in 25 years time, half the United Kingdom’s population will be obese.

Is rapid weight loss a good idea?

No, rapid weight loss is not advised for overweight and obese patients as it leads to a weight loss which is unsustainable, and many people who lose a lot of weight in a short amount of time will quickly put it back on.

Is it just over-eating and lack of exercise that cause obesity?

Overeating and lack of exercise are not the only causes of obesity. Oral contraceptives, antidepressant medications and corticosteroids can also cause a patient to put on weight.  An under-active thyroid gland or polycystic ovary syndrome can also result in weight gain. It has also been proved that there is a hereditary element to obesity, though the fact that obesity levels are three times higher today than they were in 1980 is much more likely to be down to lifestyle choices than hereditary.

What are the benefits of losing weight?

There are, of course, many benefits to be had from losing weight. You will look and feel better and you will be less at risk from heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure and certain types of cancer.

What is the best way to lose weight?

The best way to lose weight is to do it naturally, without the aid of slimming pills, or in the most extreme cases surgery. Changing your diet, eating less and exercising more will cause you to lose weight. Eating lots of small meals throughout out the day also helps to keep your metabolic rate up and in turn will help you to burn off calories. The body struggles to burn off big meals, this is why you often feel like sleeping if you have over indulged. Losing weight will also mean that you have more energy to enjoy life and do the things you want to do.
