Menstual Postponement

Sometimes a woman may feel that postponing her period may be beneficial. For example if she is going on holiday, is going through a particularly busy or hectic time or if there is some other reason which might make having a period difficult or restrictive.

The good news is that there is a prescription medication available to postpone a period. It is called Norethisterone and is taken as follows:

One tablet is taken three times a day before your period is due to start. The medication is then taken at the same dosage, every day, until the time you wish your period to begin, at which point you should stop taking the medication.  Up to sixty tablets may be prescribed, which will postpone your period for up to seventeen days.

Norethisterone 5mg

When a woman is in her menstrual cycle the balance of hormones in her body changes. Norethisterone works by affecting this balance of hormones so that the shedding of the lining of the womb (the woman’s period) is delayed.

Women who are using any type of contraceptive pill should not take Norethisterone. Norethisterone is not a contraceptive pill and will not prevent a woman from getting pregnant.
