Who can take emergency contraception?

We are happy to prescribe emergency contraception to anyone who needs it, as long as it is an appropriate medication for you to take. We do not judge you if you decide that this is the course of treatment that you wish to take. At Private Doctor Direct we believe that a woman should have control over her own body.

How does emergency contraception treatment work?

There are two versions of the emergency contraception pill, Levonelle and EllaOne.

Levonelle can be taken up to 72 hours after sexual intercourse. It contains a hormone called levonorgestrel, which prevents the ovaries from producing an egg. If an egg has already been produced then the medication ensures that the egg cannot implant itself in the womb.

EllaOne can be taken up to five days after sexual intercourse has taken place. It contains an active ingredient called ulipristal acetate, which prevents an egg from being released by the ovaries. It also changes the lining of the womb so any egg will be unable to implant itself there.

Taking the emergency contraception pill

The emergency contraceptive tablet should be taken as soon as possible as it will be more effective.

Will taking emergency contraception protect me from pregnancy for the rest of my cycle?

No it will not. If you do not wish to get pregnant you should either abstain from sexual intercourse or use barrier contraception. If you are taking a contraceptive pill then you should keep taking this as well until you have the all clear that you are not pregnant though you should also use a barrier method of contraception as well, as the emergency contraceptive pill may make your daily contraceptive pill less effective.

Is the emergency contraceptive pill safe?

Yes, the emergency contraceptive pill is safe but like any prescription medication some people may experience side effects having taken it. Most people, however, get no side effects at all. If you do suffer with any side effects after taking the emergency contraceptive pill then you should tell whoever has provided you with the treatment.
