How does Aldara cream work?

The active ingredient in Aldara cream is a medication called imiquimod. Imiquimod is a type of medication that is known as an immunomodulator. These medications work by stimulating the body’s own natural defence mechanisms. It is believed that these types of medicines work by attaching themselves to the immune cells in the skin, a process, which causes them to release defence chemicals that are called cytokines.

What is Aldara cream used for?

Aldara cream is used in the treatment of external genital warts. It is also in the treatment of warts around the anus.

Aldara cream is also used to treat superficial skin cancers and areas of rough skin that have been caused by damage from the sun.

Aldara cream is used for lesions on the scalp and on the face that are not raised, in people who have a healthy immune system if other treatments are deemed inappropriate.

How do I use Aldara cream?

When using Aldara cream, it is important to follow the instructions that you have been given by your doctor, as well as the instructions on the information leaflet that is supplied with the medication.

Who cannot use Aldara cream?

People under the age of eighteen should not use Aldara cream. It should not be used by anyone who has an allergy to any of its ingredients.
