What is Avelox used for?

Avelox is prescribed as a treatment for serious bacterial infections. Often theses are infections that have been contracted in hospitals or when older antibiotics have failed to treat the infection because it has built up a resistance to the older drugs. Avelox is prescribed as a treatment for infections of the lungs and the sinuses, including pneumonia, sinusitis and pelvic inflammatory disease. It is also used to treat Mycoplasma Genitalium when other treatments have failed.

How does Avelox work?

Avelox works by destroying the bacteria from within by inhibiting an enzyme that the bacteria need to replicate. This interrupts the normal function of the cells and results in them dying.

How is Avelox used as a treatment for pneumonia, bacterial sinusitis and pelvic inflammatory disease?

Avelox comes in 400mg tablets, and your doctor should determine the dose that you are given. The length of the course of Avelox that you are prescribed is dependent on the nature of the bacterial infection that you have, and this can vary from between five days and three weeks. You should swallow your Avelox tablet whole and take it with plenty of water. You can take Avelox either with or without food. If you are taking remedies for indigestion, or medications which contain either zinc or iron then you should take Avelox six hours either side of them.

Is Avelox used to treat other conditions?

Yes, Avelox is used to treat other conditions including tuberculosis, anthrax, meningitis and endocarditis it is also used to treat intra abdominal infections and cellulitis.

Does Avelox have any side effects?

Avelox, like all prescription medicines, can cause side effects. The most common are, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain, candidiasis, diarrhoea, headache and dizziness. The complete list of potential side effects is in the leaflet, which is supplied with the medication.

Who should not use Avelox?

You should use Avelox with caution if you are aged over sixty, are using corticosteroids, have had a lung, heart or kidney transplant or have angina. You should also not take Avelox if you have an allergy to quinolone-type antibiotics, have arrhythmia, have problems with your liver or you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
