What is Duac used for?

Duac is used to treat mid to moderate cases of acne

How does Duac work?

Duac is a gel that is applied once a day. It is an antibiotic gel that is prescribed in the treatment of acne. It disrupts the cellular structure of the bacteria in a way that means that they are unable to multiply, by preventing the bacteria from producing proteins that are necessary for the bacteria to grow and replicate. This means that the bacteria eventually die or are destroyed by the body’s immune system.

Clindamycin phosphate will be affective against many types of bacteria including Propionebacterium acnes, which is the bacteria associated with acne. The bacteria feed on the sebum in the skin and produces waste products that irritate the skin’s sebaceous glands. This makes the sebaceous glands inflamed and this can result in spots.

Benzynol peroxide is a keratolytic, a type of medication that breaks down keratin in the skin. This causes the top layer of the skin to break down and shed. This in turn helps to break down blackheads and whiteheads (comedones) and to unblock the sebaceous glands.

How do I use Duac?

  • The skin should be thoroughly washed and dried before you apply Duac.
  • The gel should be applied thinly to the affected area one a day, every evening. If the Duac does not rub into the skin easily you are applying too much of the gel.
  • Ensure that you wash your hands after applying Duac gel.
  • If you find that your skin is red, dry or peeling off after applying the gel you should decrease the amount that you are applying and apply it less frequently.
  • Only use Duac once a day. Using it more will not make the product more affective and may result in irritating your skin.
  • Duac should not be used for more than twelve weeks at a time.

Who cannot use Duac gel?

  • Duac should not be used by people who are allergic to Clindamycin phosphate, to benzyol peroxide or lincomycin.
  • Duac is not recommended for children under the age of 12.
