Aciclovir as a treatment for Cold Sores

Cold sores around the mouth are a very common complaint, though this does not detract from the fact that they are extremely unpleasant for the person suffering with them. Cold sores are often painful and unsightly and can make the sufferer feel very self-conscious. It is not surprising, therefore, that most sufferers want them to go away as quickly as possible. Aciclovir will help with this process.

Aciclovir as a treatment for Genital Herpes

Unfortunately genital herpes is not curable condition so Aciclovir cannot get rid of the virus. It can, however, greatly alleviate the symptoms, particularly the blisters filled with pus around the genital area.

How does Aciclovir work?

Aciclovir works by stopping the herpes virus from reproducing by blocking an enzyme, called DNA polymerase, which the virus needs to live and replicate. This allows the body to combat an outbreak.

How do I take Aciclovir?

Aciclovir is usually taken five times a day. Many herpes sufferers will get an advance prescription from their doctor so that they can start a course of Aciclovir as soon as they notice symptoms developing.

In some cases Aciclovir is used to supress symptoms developing, especially for people who have either frequent outbreaks or outbreaks that are particularly severe.

If you are taking Aciclovir you should keep well hydrated. The medication can also make skin more sensitive to sunlight so you should also wear a sunscreen.

What are the side effects of Aciclovir?

Most people who take Aciclovir do not experience any side effects. The most common are mild nausea, itchiness, rash and vomiting.

Is Aciclovir suitable for you?

Aciclovir is suitable for most people. It is not however, appropriate for people who have an impaired kidney function. Nor should it be prescribed to anyone who is allergic to any of the active ingredients in the medication.
