How does Cilest work?

Cilest is a hormonal contraceptive pill, something that is also known as a combined oral contraceptive. It contains two active ingredients, ethinylestradiol and norgestimate, synthetic versions of the naturally occurring hormones oestrogen and progesterone.

Cilest works by over-riding the body’s normal menstrual cycle. The hormones in the pill trick the body into thinking that ovulation has already occurred, which stops an egg from being released from the ovaries each month.

These hormones also increase the thickness of the mucus in the womb. This makes it more difficult for sperm to reach it and to reach an egg. The hormones also affect the womb lining and make it less likely that a fertilised egg will be able to implant itself there.

Taking Cilest will usually result in less painful, lighter and more regular periods. It is sometimes prescribed for women who have problems with particularly painful, heavy or irregular periods.

How do I take Cilest?

Cilest is what is known as monophasic pill, which means that each tablet contains the same dose of hormones. A single tablet is taken daily for 21 days. You then have a 7-day break from taking it. During this break the hormone levels in your blood drop. This results in what is called a ‘withdrawal bleed’, that is a bleed that is similar to your normal period. You start the taking Cilest again after seven days, even if you are still bleeding.

Who cannot take Cilest?

Cilest is not suitable for everyone. For example women who have had blood clots or blood disorders would not be prescribed the medication. Women with high blood pressure, angina or high cholesterol levels would not be prescribed Cilest. It is also not suitable for women who smoke more than forty cigarettes a day.

Your doctor will look at your medical history and decide whether Cilest is suitable for you before prescribing the medication.
