What is Diflucan (Fluconazole)?

Diflucan is a medication that is prescribed to treat fungal infections. Its main use is the treatment of thrush, something that can occur in the vagina but also in the penis. Thrush is caused by yeast or a fungus called candida albicans. Usually it lives on the surface of the skin and does not cause any problems. Occasionally, however, the yeast or the fungus multiplies and causes an infection. This results in itching, soreness and redness, and often a white discharge that has the consistency and appearance of cottage cheese. Although thrush is not an STI it can be passed on as a result of sexual contact so for this reason both partners are usually treated to prevent the thrush from reoccurring.

How to use Fluconazole?

Fluconazole come in capsule form. As it is extremely effective against thrush you will only need to take a single dose of 150mg to kill the infection. You may also be prescribed an anti fungal cream, but this depends on the symptoms that you have.

You should take your fluconazole capsule with plenty of water. You should ensure that the affected area is kept clean and dry and that you wear loose fitting underwear. Avoid using perfumed soaps and vaginal deodorants. Within seven days of taking the treatment your symptoms should be gone, if they have not then you should speak to your doctor about getting further treatment

Is Fluconazole suitable for me?

You should not take fluconazole if you are lactose intolerant. Neither should you take it if you are taking certain types of medicine for allergy, for stomach or mental health problems or for irregular heartbeat. Fluconazole can also interact with other types of medicine.

You should not take fluconazole if you are pregnant though you can take a single dose if you are breastfeeding.

Fluconazole cannot be prescribed if you have suffered an allergic reaction to it in the past or if you have had an allergic reaction or to any other antifungal medication.

Does Fluconazole have any side effects?

Most people who are prescribed Fluconazole do not suffer any side effects. Fewer than one in ten people who take the drug will suffer with mild abdominal upset, headache or itchiness. If you develop a rash or notice that your urine is dark and your stools are pale, you should see your doctor immediately. You should also see your doctor if you notice a change in your heart rhythm, or you become unusually tired and listless or you notice bruising. You should remember that these side effects are extremely rare, but if you suffer for any of them you should see your doctor.
