Asthma is a condition in which the linings of the airways and the lungs become inflamed due to irritants, making it difficult to breath. Symbicort is a product that contains two different medications, budesonide and formoterol that each work in a different way, and allow you to breath more easily. Budesonide is a corticosteroid, which works by preventing and reducing inflammation in the lungs.  Formoterol is a type of medicine that is called a bronchodilator. It works by relaxing the muscles in the airways. This enables the patient to breathe more easily.

How do I use Symbicort?

Symbicort comes as an inhaler, which your doctor will tell you how many times a day to use. It must be taken even if you have no symptoms. If you forget to take a dose, you should take it as soon as possible, but not if you are soon to take your next dose. You should never take a double dose.

Full instructions are provided with the inhaler, which tell you how it should be used. Before you use your Symbicort inhaler you should turn the red grip in one direction and then in the other, whilst holding the device upright. When you hear a click you should repeat these actions. The inhaler is then ready to use.

First, you should breathe out. Then you should place the inhaler into your mouth, close your lips and breathe in as deeply as possible. After using the inhaler you should put replace its cover and rinse your mouth out with water.

Who can use Symbicort?

Symbicort may be prescribed to anyone over the age of six. It should not be taken if you are allergic to budesonide, formoterol or to lactulose.

Symbicort should be used with caution in:

• Pregnant women or women who are trying to become pregnant
• Women who are breast feeding
• People who are diabetic
• People who have a lung infection, low blood potassium levels, high blood pressure or any problems with the heart, adrenal glands, thyroid or liver.

You should make a full disclosure to your doctor if you are or have been taking steroids, bronchodilators or medicines to treat asthma, infections, HIV/AIDs, Parkinson's disease, psychoses or depression.

You should also let your doctor know if you are soon to receive a general anaesthetic. If you make a full disclosure there should not be any opportunity for problems to occur.

Symbicort Side Effects

Symbicort may cause:

• Throat irritation
• Coughing
• Sore throat
• Headache
• Palpitations (a fast heartbeat)
• Trembling
• Thrush
• Restlessness
• Disturbed sleep
• Dizziness,
• Nausea
• Bruising
• Muscle cramps

If you experience any kind of allergic reaction (swelling of the face, swelling of the mouth and tongue, difficulty in breathing, hives or feeling faint) or wheeziness or shortness of breath after using your inhaler, then you should contact your doctor immediately.
