What is Terbinafine?

Terbinafine is a medication that is prescribed for the treatment of nail and skin infections that are the result of a fungus called Tinea. Tinea causes athlete’s foot, ringworm and jock itch (a infection which affects the groin).

Terbinafine can also be prescribed to treat infections under the nails on the hands and the feet. Terbinafine causes the membranes of the cells responsible for the infection to break down and die. This prevents the infection from spreading.

How do I take Terbinafine?

Terbinafine comes in tablet form and should be taken once a day. You should take Terbinafine tablets with plenty of water. The amount of time that you will need to take the tablets depends on the nature of the infection that you have.

It normally takes between two to four weeks to clear up jock itch and between two to six weeks to clear up athlete’s foot. Treating nail infections can take up to six months as the fungus may sometime become rapped beneath the nail.

Can I take Terbinafine tablets?

Before we are able to prescribe you Terbinafine tablets at Private Doctor Direct you will need to complete an online consultation form. You will not be able to take Terbinafine if you are pregnant or you are breast-feeding or if you are allergic to the active ingredient.

If you have any problems affecting the kidneys or the liver, or suffer with systemic lupus erythematosis (SLE) or psoriasis then you may not be able to take Terbinafine.

Does Terbinafine cause any side effects?

People taking Terbinafine will usually not get any side effects. Side effects can include having an upset stomach, headache, muscle or joint pains or rash though most of the symptoms will disappear after a few days of treatment. Very occasionally (about one in a hundred people taking Terbinafine) will find that they have taste loss, though this will usually return to normal after the treatment is finished. If your urine appears dark or your stools appear pale or you suffer with a skin rash whilst taking Terbinafine then you should see your doctor immediately. You should also go to see you doctor if you experience any problems with your breathing, pains in your stomach, weakness in your muscles or if you become listless.
